Victoria University of Wellington celebrates new graduates

Wellington will be abuzz with jubilant graduands this week as more than 2,700 students from Victoria University of Wellington celebrate the successful completion of their studies.

A total of 2,742 qualifications will be awarded to 2,459 students over six ceremonies, with additional celebrations for Māori and Pasifika graduands. Across the ceremonies, 39 students will graduate with a PhD and one with a Doctor of Musical Arts. A further 707 students opted to receive their qualifications earlier this year without attending a ceremony.

This year is also the first time there will be graduands from Victoria University’s recently established Faculty of Health. These 34 graduands will proudly cross the stage wearing emerald green stoles, the newly chosen colour for the Faculty.

Victoria University alumnus and former Supreme Court judge Sir Terence Arnold, QC, will receive an Honorary Doctorate at one of Wednesday’s graduation ceremonies, acknowledging his outstanding contribution to the legal profession.

Victoria University’s Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smithextends his congratulations to all graduands for successfully completing their studies.

“Graduation is a proud tradition at Victoria University. It’s a time for us to acknowledge the achievements of our students, and it’s also an opportunity for the graduands’ families, friends and the city of Wellington to celebrate with them.

“Some of our graduands will continue to call Wellington their home and will go on to become the capital city’s next generation of leaders, innovators, thinkers and entrepreneurs. Others will decide to travel further afield and show the world what an education from Victoria University looks like—rigorous and committed to academic excellence.

“Everyone graduating this week is joining the global community of Victoria University alumni, and I look forward to seeing how they make their mark on the world.”

There are two formal parades of staff and graduands, starting at 12pm on Tuesday and Thursday. The parades will run from Old Government Buildings along Lambton Quay to Civic Square.

Chancellor Paviour-Smithencourages members of the public to celebrate with the graduands.

“Sharing graduation with the wider community is a memorable moment and shows our graduands just how proud we are of them. We invite the public to come to the parades and join the celebrations.”
