The latest international rankings published today confirm Victoria University of Wellington's reputation as New Zealand's globally ranked capital city university with Victoria ranked in the top 50 universities in the world for Law, 55th in the world for arts and humanities and 84th in the world for social sciences and management.

The results from QS World University Rankings confirm that Victoria is among the top 1% of universities in the world for 14 subjects and in the top 2% of universities overall. There are more than 18,000 universities worldwide and the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject rank the top institutions.

Victoria’s ranking at 46 in the world for Law reflects the University’s strength in this area. Victoria’s Law School is located in New Zealand’s legal and political heart – opposite Parliament and adjacent to the Supreme Court – making it a unique hub of debate, analysis and dialogue for those who contribute to the intellectual life of our capital city.

Victoria’s ranking of 55th in the world for arts and humanities and 84th in social science and management highlights the University’s standing as a world-leading capital city university with a significant role in cultivating intellectual and creative capital and facilitating innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth. Victoria’s business school is one of only 77 commerce faculties worldwide to achieve the highly sought after Triple Crown of international commerce accreditations.

Of the other subjects in the top 100 band, two are in humanities—English Language and Literature and Performing Arts—providing further evidence of Victoria’s world-leading capability in this area. Outstanding results were also achieved in Education, Accounting and Finance, Geography and Psychology, all of which placed in the top 100.

An additional seven subjects at Victoria are ranked in the top 150 in the world. They are History, Linguistics, Earth and Marine Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Politics and International Studies and Sociology

“These are very positive subject results, which affirm Victoria’s standing as an internationally respected and globally ranked capital city university,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford.

“We are proud of our consistently strong results in law, humanities, business, education, psychology, and earth and marine science – results that are entirely dependent on the outstanding reputation of our academics and the high quality of our research”.
