Globally ranked

New international rankings out today confirm Victoria University of Wellington's reputation as New Zealand's globally ranked capital city university with Victoria among the top 100 universities in the world in 10 subjects.

In addition, the QS results confirm that Victoria is among the top 1% of universities in the world for 15 subject areas. There are more than 16,000 universities worldwide and the 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject rank the top institutions.

In Social Policy and Administration, Victoria is ranked 50th in the world. This reflects Victoria’s capability in this area with the University home to New Zealand’s only School of Government undertaking teaching and research on public policy and public administration and management.

Law, another area of strength for Victoria, is one of nine other subjects also ranked in the top 100 globally.

Three of those other subjects in the top 100 band are in humanities—English Language and Literature, History and Linguistics—providing further evidence of Victoria’s world-leading capability in this area.

Outstanding results were also achieved in Accounting and Finance, Development Studies, Education, Geography and Psychology, all of which also placed in the top 100.

An additional five subjects at Victoria are ranked in the top 150 in the world. They are Earth and Marine Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Politics and International Studies and Sociology

“These are very positive subject results, which affirm Victoria’s standing as an internationally respected and globally ranked capital city university,” says Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford.

“In addition to further confirmation of our strength in humanities, the rankings also underline Victoria’s capability and track record in business, commerce and government. Victoria is among an elite group of commerce faculties to hold the Triple Crown of international commerce accreditations (from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the Association of MBAs and EQUIS – European Quality Improvement System.

Overall, Victoria is ranked 229th equal out of more than 3,500 universities in the QS World University rankings and 59th in the world for arts and humanities.
