Victoria University honours its best

Victoria University of Wellington recognised some of its outstanding teachers, researchers and students at a function held at Parliament last night.

The Victoria teaching and research excellence awards were presented at a gathering hosted by Tertiary Education Minister Hon. Steven Joyce and Chris Bishop MP and attended by more than 300 people, including members of parliament, diplomats, notable Wellingtonians, local councillors and Victoria alumni.

Winning entries in the University’s Summer Gold Poster Competition, and the students who created them, were also at the event.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford says Victoria is committed to recognising excellence in all aspects of University life.

“We are proud to acknowledge members of our teaching staff who approach their profession with creativity and innovation to inspire a love of learning in their students.”

Victoria also presented research excellence awards to staff with expertise in areas ranging from the science of emotions, the future of coral reefs and the history of the Great War, to digital futures, the sociology of punishment and the history of book and print culture.

“These recipients illustrate the depth and impact of research undertaken at Victoria. They also show why we are the top university in New Zealand for research quality and why we have achieved a global standing exceeding that attained by 96 percent of the world’s 7,000 universities.”

The Victoria University awards were presented by Chris Bishop, a Victoria alumnus.
