High quality Victoria researchers recognised

Researchers at Victoria University of Wellington are among a small group of leading New Zealand scientists to receive prestigious Rutherford Foundation Trust Awards and James Cook Research Fellowships.

Professor James Noble, from the School of Engineering and Computer Science, has been awarded a highly sought-after James Cook Research Fellowship to address software failures by identifying recurring design patterns in the specification of the design of software systems.

Professor Dale Carnegie, Head of the School of Engineering and Computer Science says: “The School is immensely happy that Professor Noble’s world-leading research has been deservedly recognised by this award, which further strengthens our international research standing."

Dr Rachael Shaw from Victoria’s School of Biological Sciences receives a Rutherford postdoctoral fellowship to support her research into the North Island robin (toutouwai). Dr Shaw was also recently announced as a recipient of Marsden funding to further her studies in the same area.

Honours student Abraham Mains, also from the School of Biological Sciences, has been awarded a Cambridge-Rutherford Memorial Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge. Abraham will complete his PhD research at Cambridge into understanding the development of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), the most fatal cancer of the brain, and the possible development of new drug therapies to treat it.

Associate Professor Simon Davy, Head of the School of Biological Sciences, says: “We are very proud of Dr Shaw and Mr Mains. These awards are a wonderful boost to their research and further confirmation of the strength of research capability at Victoria.”

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce says the two schemes, which have combined Government funding of more than $1.7 million, are aimed at developing the skills of New Zealand scientists.

“These researchers are of the highest quality and are working on projects that are of real benefit to New Zealand,” he says.
