The Faculty of Law’s Student and Academic Services Manager Alison Munro retires from Victoria this week, after a 28 year association with the University.

Although Alison has seen a lot of changes throughout her time at Victoria, one aspect of University life remains the same—students.Alison Munro in OGB

“I don’t think students have changed too much—I still enjoy working with them. They just study differently now with their laptops… they’re so reliant on them!

“I did my degree at Victoria, in the days when you fossicked around in the library. I would hate to have to sit in front of a computer all day and study.”

Alison joined the University in March 1988 as a secretary in the Personnel Office, and then became Appointments Administrator. She has held a range of position in three different faculties, including the then Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Science.

But for the last 10 years, Alison has held the position of Student and Academic Services Manager at the Faculty of Law.

“During my time at Victoria, I have seen the Faculty of Law move from Rankine Brown to Old Kirk and then to Old Government Building.”

She has also had offices in six different buildings across the Kelburn and Pipitea campuses, with what was Berendsen House (now Bill Manhire House)—Alison’s favourite. “It was the best office—the Faculty of Arts staff shared the space with Science. We had fabulous views!”

Alison plans to travel next year, but for the time being she is going to enjoy her retirement and take it easy!

“I really will miss the people, especially my team—they’re a great bunch of people to work with.”
