The use of citations, that is, illustrative sentences showing how, when and why words are used, is important in lexicographical research. If you would like to help us provide evidence for actual usage of New Zealand words or phrases, please send us an email with as many of the following details as you can:

  • The word or phrase
  • What you think the word or phrase means
  • Where you first met the word or phrase (e.g. newspaper, book, radio, other) and further details about the source
  • The exact wording and punctuation of the citation (or mail/fax us a copy of the citation source)
  • If the word is new to you/well-known
  • The approximate age of users of the word
  • Whether the word is of local or imported origin
  • Whether the word is used by any particular occupation or social group, or in particular regions or contexts
  • Your name, address, and contact details
