Language in the Trades project report launch

Dr Averil Coxhead and Dr Jean Parkinson have launched their Language in the Trades project report.

Language in the Trades.

How do learners learn the language specific to a trade, and what are the features of that language?

Dr Averil Coxhead and Dr Jean Parkinson of the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies are part of a project, funded by VUW, Weltec and Ako Aotearoa, asking how learners learn the language specific to a trade, and what the features of that language are.

The project investigated the written and spoken language that students are exposed to and which they must acquire when they learn the building trades (carpentry and plumbing) as well as automotive technology and fabrication.

The final report for the project was launched at Te Papa on Thursday 9 November.
