Every year, postgraduate students in Philosophy in the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations are invited to organise a retreat to get off campus and to spend some quality time with new and continuing students.

This year, the students chose to stay in beautiful Raumati Beach, at a rented bach called Big Bach. The retreat has an academic component, with each student making a presentation about their research, but mostly it's a fun weekend away and a chance to get to know each other better and develop a vibrant community among the postgraduate students.

The students from 2018 also had some words to share:

"In Academic Community: Discourse or Discord? Ronald Barnet discusses the value of an academic community saying, “Problems of ecology and of the environment, of malnutrition, of social order, of economy, of social welfare, and the form and distribution of employment: all of these and many others will require the combination and integration of the planet’s intellectual resources if they are to be tackled in any kind of adequate way,” and to achieve this we need a healthy academic community which facilitates and promotes rational discourse. The philosophy postgraduates are grateful to the school for creating and supporting the opportunity for us to discuss our research either by giving a presentation or a more informal talk about our work-in-progress, and gain peer feedback, in a relaxed, 'retreat' atmosphere. We appreciate the ongoing efforts of the school to support the postgraduate student community and thank the staff who help us."

The Philosophy Retreat is one of many opportunities available to postgraduate students in the School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations.
