Centre for Strategic Studies holds symposium on NZ's maritime security

On the 1st of May the Centre for Strategic Studies celebrated its 25th anniversary with a symposium entitled “New Zealand’s Maritime Security Environment: Emerging Challenges and Policy Responses.”
The symposium was well attended with speakers from a range of backgrounds including keynote addresses from the Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Rear Admiral John Martin, and Commodore Stephen Woodall of the Royal Australian Navy. The day featured four additional panels focusing on policy making, increasing competition and contestation, environmental and resources challenges, and capabilities and choices for future governments.
It was recognised that New Zealanders need to have a greater awareness of our maritime environment from both a security and conservation standpoint, and that growing challenges are likely to create increased tensions and complexity for New Zealand’s role in the Pacific and beyond in the future.
