Master’s degrees by thesis

The Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research is responsible for the governance of our Master’s by thesis programmes.

The Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research (WFGR) is responsible for the governance of all the Master’s by thesis programmes. The normal, ongoing management of Masters candidature is the responsibility of the relevant academic Faculty and School.

If you are interested in enrolling for a Master’s degree, you should contact one of Victoria University of Wellington’s academic faculties or schools directly, or if you are unsure about what postgraduate option would suit you best, please contact the Postgraduate Liaison Officer.

Information for Master’s by Thesis students

While the majority of this website is written for doctoral students, some sections also apply to Master’s by thesis students.

  • You may find it helpful to read our guide to supervision which covers the responsibilities of both supervisors and students.
  • You will be expected to submit progress reports at key points in your candidature.
  • Many of our workshops and seminars for doctoral students are also open to Masters students.

Converting from a Master’s to a PhD

In some cases, it may be possible for Master’s by thesis students to upgrade to a PhD.
