- as Course Lecturer
Dr Benji Compton completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Otago. He then worked in natural product chemistry, specialising in the synthesis of plant metabolites that have interesting biological properties.
He is currently synthesising new glycolipids that modulate the human immune system as part of a collaborative research programme with the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research. Benji recently returned to the University of Otago as a visiting academic for nine months, which he says was a rewarding experience.
“I was overseeing students’ work and progressing my own research, but I found it really beneficial to be surrounded by people from so many different disciplines. It helped increase my understanding of how the compounds we make interact with living systems.”
If he wasn’t a chemist, Benji says he would be a builder. He often spends time at the weekend building things for his children and doing home improvements. “Just like in chemistry, I enjoy creating new and useful things—only at work what I create is at an atomic scale!”
