The the Top Innovation Award (TIA) Ecological Design Award is given in recognition of design-based achievements that enhance the wellbeing of humankind and demonstrate the fantastic power of design, so as to provide technical implementation schemes and commercial application models for global ecological civilization construction and green and low-carbon development.

The Faculty of Architecture and Design submission—which received the only institutional award at the ceremony—was a group entry, bringing together a body of work from the MADE research team, their research associates and postgraduates students, who are exploring innovative applications for multi-material additive manufacturing, including 3D printing as a method of repurposing plastic waste.

Professor Marc Aurel Schnabel, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, says he was delighted to hear the Faculty’s entry was successful.

“This is wonderful recognition of the hard work the MADE research team have been undertaking for a number of years within the Faculty. Sustainable issues in design are important consideration for the industry, as well as for us as a Faculty and an Institution. To be recognised for this research on the international stage is a reflection our commitment to excellence in research and the calibre of our staff.”

The Faculty’s entry was chosen from more than 2,000 entries from more than 30 countries and regions around the world.
