Loader introduces her current project Ngā Waiata a ngā Herehere (with Mike Ross), which examines a manuscript comprising some 230 waiata (songs) written by prisoners from the battle of Rangiriri in the New Zealand Wars. Her talk provides an overview of the specifically Māori historical methods involved in this research, including her approach to researching whakapapa, moteatea and manuscripts.


Speaker Bios

Dr Arini Loader is a lecturer in History at Victoria University of Wellington. A short film based on her aforementioned research project has just been completed, to be premiered in late October 2019. Her research centres on 19th century Māori literature, earning her the Royal Society Te Apārangi Te Kōpūnui Māori Research Award for uncovering historic Māori voices through te reo and interdisciplinary research methods.
