This talk will begin by exploring some concepts around practice-based research. It will discuss how the aim of this kind of research is not just to create an artefact, or even to reveal our process, but more importantly, to generate shared knowledge. In other words, as artists, how can we offer novel solutions to problems rather than simply illuminate our personal practice?
Raqi Syed will use MINIMUM MASS, a short narrative virtual reality project as a case study. In particular, he will discuss how he uses a bricolage approach to both conceptualize the design for this project and overcome technical hurdles that are unique to the creation of complex computer-generated worlds.
Speaker Bios
Raqi Syed is a Senior Lecturer at VUW School of Design and an XR Developer. She’s worked as a Visual Effects Artist on films such as Tangled, District 9, Avatar, Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, and The Hobbit Trilogy. Her writing focuses on film and gender, new media technologies, and the history and business of visual effects. Raqi is a 2018 Sundance New Frontier Story Lab Fellow and a Turner Fellow. She holds an MFA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and an MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University of Wellington.
