Concerts and recitals

The Hub, Victoria University of Wellington

Description

The gamelan orchestra is made up of metal percussion instruments, including xylophones, drums, and gongs. Their unique sound is unlike anything else—the music of Javanese ensembles has been described as ‘flowing water’ or ‘blossoming flowers’ and the style of Balinese ensembles is characterised by unpredictable rhythms and wild dynamic contrasts. The New Zealand School of Music in Wellington houses ensembles from both Bali and Java, and both will perform at this concert.

To perfect the classical dance movements of Bali and Java, performers train from early childhood. Witness the dancers’ intricate gestures as they perform alongside the captivating sounds of the gamelan in this free concert in the Hub at Victoria University of Wellington.

All welcome—no bookings necessary.
