Suffrage Songs Recomposed
Forward, forward, sisters! 1890s texts made modern by nine female composers
Description
Celebrating women in music in Aotearoa, this concert sees nine female composers and songwriters take suffrage songs from the 1890s and haul them into the modern day. Various singers will be joined by instrumental, electronic and taonga puoro musicians to perform re-imaginings of these politically trailblazing texts.
One of the composers commissioned is NZSM PhD candidate Jasmine Lovell-Smith, whose great great grandfather was married to Kate Sheppard. The winner of the School’s 'Lullaby Competition for the Prime Minister', Chanelle Davis, will also perform her winning lullaby in the concert.
This event is part of the wider 'Music From Her' festival taking place 9-14 October, presented by the New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī, at Victoria University of Wellington, to celebrate, support and encourage diverse voices of women working in music in New Zealand, in the year of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.
