Description

‘Rome, 16 October 1943: Voices from the Ghetto’ is an evening of scholarship and commemoration to mark the 75th anniversary of the raid of the Jewish neighbourhood in Rome, and the deportation of its inhabitants. It is sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Wellington and co-hosted by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The theme of the evening is recapturing lost or marginal voices: can the meanings of words and the presence of those who spoke them be renewed by the timeless narratives of still and moving images?

The programme includes screening of an 8' short by Italian filmmaker Ettore Scola and the launch of Sarah Laing’s visual adaptation of Giacomo Debenedetti's 1944 short story, 16 October 1943.
