Plate tectonics of Zealandia

The Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, Professor Grant Guilford, invites you to a public lecture by Professor of Tectonics and Geophysics, Rupert Sutherland.

Lectures, talks and seminars

Registration is essential

Lecture Theatre 1 (TTRLT1), Te Toki a Rata, Gate 7, Kelburn Parade

Description

Plate tectonics affects basic features of life on Earth, from our landscapes to our climates, hazards and natural resources. Earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain formations reveal glimpses of active tectonic processes.

However, new research into the reshaping of the poorly known continent of Zealandia between 50 and 20 million years ago (the largest plate reshuffle we know about) is providing fresh insights into plate tectonics.

Join Victoria University of Wellington’s Professor Rupert Sutherland as he explains how scientific drilling and exploration of this area has provided new insight into how plate tectonics work.

Our inaugural lectures are very popular. Please RSVP as spaces are limited. Register by Friday 6 July.
