Dr Stoop was appointed Chief Executive of the Education Council at the end of 2015. He was variously Deputy Secretary Student Achievement and Deputy Secretary Graduate Achievement, Vocations and Careers at the Ministry of Education from 2013.
He was Chief Executive of the Education Review Office from 2007 to 2013 and from 2004 to 2007 Chief Executive of Christchurch College of Education and Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Canterbury. He is a Secondary School teacher by profession and for seven years was Principal at Burnside High School. Dr Stoop was awarded a Woolf Fisher Fellowship in 2004 to attend an executive leadership programme at Harvard University.
He is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management and was awarded the Queen’s Service Order for Services to Education in 2014. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy and a Master of Arts – First Class Honours, from Canterbury University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership from Oxford University.
