Chinese New Year Festival 2018

On Saturday 17th February, Wellington's local Chinese community, alongside many other residents and visitors to the capital, turned out in force for another successful Chinese New Year Festival.  The Confucius Institute was proud to continue its sponsorship of the Festival, and help Wellington usher in the Year of the Dog in style.  People born under the sign of the dog are said to be intelligent and loyal, and to be honest and true.

Lanterns, a mountain of springs rolls, dragons, lions and Peking opera performers all added plenty of colour.  Thousands passed through the art, culture and food stalls at the Michael Fowler Centre, where the Confucius Institute also had a presence.  Our MLAs joined the the procession of dancers, musicians and school children for the street parade that wound its way through the city to the waterfront.  The day’s activities were capped off with a fireworks display on Saturday night.
