The Belt and Road Initiative and New Zealand — China Relations

The New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre (NZCCRC) hosted a
delegation from the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) for a round table on the Belt and Road Initiative and China- New Zealand relations. The Chinese delegation was led by Mr Cai Wu Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the National Committee (CPPCC); Former Minister of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. Mr Cai was joined by Mr Liu Huanxing, Deputy Director-General, Office of the Foreign affairs Committee, The National Committee of the CPPCC and other distinguished guests.

The delegation met with a panel of New Zealand scholars to engage in a range of discussions related to the Belt and Road initiative. The Chinese delegation paid particular attention to New Zealand’s views on the initiative and areas of potential cooperation and implementation. Most of the discussion centred on New Zealand and China’s developmental strategies, the objectives of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative and the importance of cooperation. The roundtable led to a greater understanding for participants of what the Belt and Road will mean for New Zealand, China and the region.
