Alternatives to internships

Internships aren't the only experiences that can improve your employability.

Part-time jobs

Don't underestimate the adaptability, attitude and ability to work with others that comes from a range of casual and part-time jobs. Recruiters see these as important ways of you understanding the dynamics of working. Check NZUni Talent, Student Job Search and other job sites.

Voluntary work

Doing relevant voluntary work is valuable work experience. Connect with the Wellington Plus Programme, WILP and agencies such as Volunteer Wellington who recruit volunteers for a wide range of roles with not-for-profit (NFP) organisations. From one-off street collections or sustainability projects to strategic planning or marketing campaigns, volunteering can give you opportunities while contributing to the lives of others.

Work shadowing

Sometimes an organisation will allow a one or two-week period of work experience, or allow a member of their staff to be ‘shadowed’. Work shadowing usually involves spending a day with a professional and observing them in their role.

Mentoring

Seek out a mentor through your own networks or a programme such as Alumni as Mentors (AAM). You can also use strategies such as informational interviewing to connect with professionals who might be open to ad hoc meetings or persuaded to be your mentor for a short time.
