Research interests

Humanitarian aid and post disaster reconstruction and in particular the role of architects and engineers together with the technology and innovation they can bring to complex situations.

Current research projects

Management, decision making and leadership in post disaster contexts. The use of Drones in post disaster reconstruction, disaster simulations and humanitarian training, innovative methods of shelter, the impact of disasters on Maori, resilience and Quality of Life following disasters. Supervising 10 Master and 4 PhD students.

Research partnerships and collaborative work

These include Matauranga Maori National Science Challenge (lead by Dr Jon Proctor Massey University), Transformation of the Building Industry (lead by Prof Suzanne Wilkinson at Auckland University); RedR Australia (lead by Paula Fritzgerald and FranciscoMonteiro); Climate Change and Green Architecture (with Prof Santosa at ITS University Surabaya, Indonesia), the Maori Response (with Maire Kipa at te Putahitanga o te Waipounamu in Christchurch and Riria Allen at Te Tai O Marokura Health & Social Service in Kaikoura), Drone Research (with Gareth Curtis at Skysurv based in Wellington) and the Centre for Disaster Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction (based at Auckland University).
