Bio

Professor André Brown is Professor of Interdisciplinary Design at the School of Architecture.

André's research and teaching is in the field of architectural technologies and their inter-disciplinary application. More specifically this takes in areas that include digital architecture, urban & heritage issues, sustainable technologies and technological innovation.

His research on computer aids for design development dates to the 1980s. He has been Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Architectural Computing, published by SAGE, since its inception 17 years ago. He was elected President of the European organisation for education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design (eCAADe) from 2002 to 2006 and retains membership of the eCAADe Council. He has been conference organiser of both an eCAADe Conference (1999, Liverpool) and CAAD Futures Conference (2005, Vienna)

Previously, at the University of Liverpool, he was Maxwell Fry Professor of Architecture. There he was Head of the School of Combined Honours for four years, managing cross-disciplinary degrees, and subsequently was Head of the School of Architecture (2009–2013), a period that saw the school almost double in size.

From July 2014 to July 2017, he was Vice President of the largest and rapidly expanding Joint Venture University in China, Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. He had previously played a major part in establishing Architecture at XJTLU. He gained an honorary status with the city of Suzhou for his work at XJTLU.

In 2010 he managed one week of events at the Liverpool Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, directing a programme of events under the banner of ‘Urban Design Future’. A book with that title was one product of the Expo event.
