Working title

Quantifying modern changes in New Zealand glaciers, and investigating their climatic drivers

Project aim and description

Since 1977, end of summer snowline elevations for 50 'index' glaciers in the Southern Alps of New Zealand have been recorded using oblique aerial photographs. This PhD project aims to develop a semi-automated method that revisits these images and uses the photogrammetric approach Structure from Motion to quantify glacier fluctuations. The method will be used to develop terminus position and snowline elevation chronologies for all 50 New Zealand glaciers over the past 40 years. These chronologies will then be used in conjunction with mathematical modelling to better understand the climatic drivers of New Zealand glaciers.
