Other universities have retired the word 'Victoria'

A number of other universities around the world have retired the word 'Victoria' from their name for the same reasons we are considering it.

The most recent to do so was the University of Manchester, which removed the word ‘Victoria’ in 2004. After extensive market research on the naming of universities they concluded that:

  • Two words are better than three and one of those two words must be ‘University’.
  • The best choice for the second word is your city.
  • Any additional words reduce the perception that a university is the leading university in its city.
  • Including your establishment date alongside your name is an important proxy for quality.

The University of Manchester tell us that it has been a very positive move.
