Putting leadership in its place

What impact does one’s physical place have in creating and diminishing effective leadership?

Inaugural lecture—Professor Brad Jackson

November 2017

Mainstream and social media encourage us to see leadership as the exclusive preserve of personality and position. But what impact does one’s physical place have in creating and diminishing effective leadership? Where we are, and where we want to be, are powerful resources and constraints for leadership that are generally underutilised. Paradoxically, in an age when so much of the world is experienced virtually, the geographic imagination has become even more vital in creating the purposeful leadership needed to tackle the critical, place-based challenges that we all face.

This is Professor Jackson’s inaugural lecture as Professor of Public and Community Leadership at Victoria University of Wellington.
