What you can access

When you connect to wirelessVic, you have access to the World Wide Web. This allows you to access to the Victoria University website (including Blackboard, studentVUW, the library catalogue and the library databases) If you choose to enter the secure area on wirelessVic, you will have access to your home drive (H:drive). At the present time wireless printing for students is not available.

What you need

To connect to wirelessVic you will need a laptop that has an enabled wireless card that supports 802.11a,b or g. You also need to be in range of a wireless access point. Coverage maps can be found on the Coverage page.

How to connect

Ensure your wireless connection is enabled, Connect to the victoria wireless network. When connected, open your browser. Make sure your internet settings are configured to use "automatic configuration script" - (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/proxy-scs.pac) or "automatically detect settings". You will be redirected to the wireless authentication page. Enter your usual student username and password (there is no need to prefix your username with student\), choose the student domain and click enter. You will then be directed to the wireless welcome page. Some browsers will open a small “login successful” window with a log-out button. We advise that you minimise this to allow an easy way to log-out later. It is also recommended that you bookmark the welcome page to allow you to easily navigate back to use the secure network or the logout button.

  • Web Browsing

Click on the “Web Access” icon.

  • Help and support

Click on the “Help” icon.

  • To logout from your web session

In order to logout from your web session, you can either:

- Use the logout window that you minimised earlier.

- Navigate back to the welcome page http://www.victoria.ac.nz/wirelessvic

- Go to the logout page via the following URL https://wireless.victoria.ac.nz/logout.html

    • To enter the secure wireless (PC/Internet Explorer Users)

Navigate to the welcome page, click on the “secure network” icon

    Enter your username and password

If you are entering the secure area for the first time, you may be asked to install a new browser component from “F5 Networks”. This is required for security. You will be asked a few times to run the new component. Choose to “run” rather than “save” when asked. When done, click the “complete” prompt. Then click to install the device.

You will be redirected to the university homepage. A small “F5” icon will be shown in the bottom right taskbar while you are connected securely. You can now use network drives, email and printers. If you need help setting these up please call the service desk on #5050.

When finished in the secure area you should right-click on the “f5” icon and choose “terminate connection”. When you have finished on the wireless, you will still need to logout from your web session using the links as described in the above section.

    • To enter the secure wireless (Mac/Safari Users)

Navigate to the welcome page, click on the “secure network” icon

    Enter your username and password

If you are entering the secure area for the first time, you may be asked to install a new browser component from “F5 Networks”. This is required for security. You will be asked a few times to run the new component. Choose to “run” rather than “save” when asked. When done, click the “complete” prompt. Then click to install the device.

The remote user access “Webtop” will now open. Click on “Student Access”. A small blue “SSL VPN” window will appear. This should be minimised, not closed. If it is closed, your secure session will end. The VUW homepage will also open. You can still use the Web from here, or can map drives as normal. You cannot logout of your web session until you have closed the secure connection.
