Introduction

Dai Gilbertson is the first New Zealander elected to be president of the Australia-New Zealand Academy of Management and was awarded a Fellowship in recognition of his long service and contributions as Vice President, reviewer, member of editorial boards and teacher - all in the management domain.

As a Senior Fulbright Scholar Dai held a position with the University of Alabama's School of Business and also consulted on organization development with the prestigious Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.

Dai training spans management, marketing, and strategy with an emphasis on action oriented research and organization development. His emphasis is applied and action oriented research that both underpin the processes of diagnosis-led interventions.

Such an approach demands a wide appreciation of behaviour in organizational settings and of challenges facing individuals in domains such as leadership. Wide experience as a consultant to NZ business and government has seen Dai working with a Who's Who of large and small businesses and briefing a government caucus. The Innovation and Action Research Clinic is one of Dai's recent innovations that reaches out to the Wellington community as a source of advice and counsel.

Fundamental to Dai's academic contribution is the process of applied case research whether it be of problems in human resources, the change of a culture in a hospital or the processes of innovation and the cases insights gained from studying entrepreneurs in New Zealand.

Seven books of such cases are the cornerstone of Dai's research and its translation into research-led teaching whether at the entry level course, in the MBA or in the PhD programme. Two Prime Ministers have commended his work in their introductions to his innovation case books.

Dr Gilbertson's contributions to futures thinking in the New Zealand sports domain are especially noteworthy where he has led almost all of the major sports to think through challenging times such as the 'failed' rugby world cup.

A foundation trustee of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Dai led Operation Olympic Spirit to war torn East Timor and received the NZ operational Service Medal and the East Timor Medal from the NZ Government. He was one of the Mangers of New Zealand House for the Sydney Olympic Games and received many commendations for his unique 'kiwi style'.

Dai has received three awards for his outstanding contributions to teaching excellence at Victoria University and his reputation has carried him to make contributions throughout New Zealand as a presenter and PhD examiner and internationally in the IMBA programme in Hong Kong and as a member of the Chief Executive's Forum in the Ivey School at University of Western Ontario.
