The Industrial Relations Centre was established in 1970 and is located in the Victoria Management School.
Stephen Blumenfeld is the Acting Director of the Centre. The Industrial Relations Centre continues to provide a forum for research into industrial relations, human resource management, labour markets and any area related to employment relations. It supports this research through funds raised by the Centre's activities. The Centre is home to the Developing Human Capability Project.
The Centre combines academic research of high quality with the dissemination of that research to the practitioner community.
The Centre stages an annual series of Employment Agreement Seminars around the country to report to practitioners on wages and conditions contained in the Industrial Relations Centre's comprehensive database of Collective Employment Contracts and Agreements. The Employment Agreements: Bargaining Trends & Employment Law Update is published as a result of these seminars.

Industrial Relations Centre Celebrates 40 years
The year 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Industrial Relations Centre (IRC) at Victoria University of Wellington.
During those four decades, the industrial relations environment in New Zealand has changed significantly. Throughout that time, the IRC has made a considerable contribution to discussion and debate of the implications of those changes for employers, employees, unions and government policymakers. These and many others have come to rely on the research and analysis of changes in New Zealand’s industrial relations policy and practice contained in the IRC’s publications and presented at its seminars.
The 25th Anniversary Seminar was held in November 1995, when the focus of public discussion and debate was the Employment Contracts Act and the significant changes that law brought to industrial relations in New Zealand. Fifteen years on, we have the opportunity to look back at changes made under the Employment Relations Act and to consider what might lie ahead for industrial relations practitioners dealing with a rapidly changing economic environment.
We are pleased to announce, therefore, that the IRC plans to mark its 40th year with a series of working papers that look back as well as forward at the ever-changing environment of industrial relations in New Zealand. In addition, as the culmination of next year’s celebrations, the IRC will be hosting a one-day seminar in November 2010, immediately preceding the Conference on Labour, Employment and Work (LEW) in New Zealand.
