The Industrial Relations Centre’s Collective Employment Agreements database contains the most comprehensive set of data on collective employment conditions in New Zealand.

Since 1992, the Industrial Relations Centre has surveyed New Zealand employers and trade unions and requested copies of employment contracts/agreements that have been collectively negotiated. As agreements have expired, the Centre has contacted the supplying parties and requested a copy of the renegotiated agreement. In this manner we have established a longitudinal data series from which we can monitor changes in the outcomes of collective bargaining over a 17 year period.

The IRC also conducts an annual survey of registered trade unions to monitor trends in union membership in New Zealand.  The data provide information that spans 1991 to 2009.

We are able to provide information for researchers and practitioners on:

  • Collective employment conditions and wage trends for particular years and for particular sectors and/or industries.
  • Specific agreements (only available with the consent of the parties to the agreement).
  • Union membership trends.
