Undergraduate student exchanges
Exchange agreementsVictoria now has several exchange agreements with Latin American countries, and increasing numbers of students are taking advantage of these. All Victoria students, upon acceptance to the exchange program, receive a $1,000 grant, and further scholarships through NZUSS are also available. The University currently has exchange programs with: Argentina: Brazil: Chile: Colombia: Click here to check out the details! Student storiesSophie Belton is a student of Development Studies and Spanish. She spent the second trimester of 2006 in Valparaiso through the Victoria University ‘overseas experience’ (VIC OE) exchange program – “The exchange program has provided me with a great opportunity to live in a country that is in a process of change. Chileans tend to be politically aware, and a considerable part of the population seems willing to fight for basic social changes, which, from a development/environmental point of view, is really fascinating to experience. People are very welcoming and friendly, the university ‘de Valparaiso’ has a very relaxed atmosphere and the town is full of colorful character. I would really recommend coming to study here, not just for the study but for the whole experience.” Monica Evans studied Political Science and Development Studies at undergraduate level, and also spent the second trimester of 2006 in Valparaiso, although she and Sophie made sure they only spoke to each other in Spanish. When she wasn't studying, she played capoeira on the beach in Viña del Mar, ran away from police water cannons in protests, danced in parades and tried to convince Chileans to say no to plastic bags. She went on to write for an English-language newspaper, the Valparaiso Times, work in an animal refuge in Bolivia, and train in African dance in Brazil. Now back doing her Masters in Development Studies at Vic, she says: "The exchange program opened so many doors for me. I feel so lucky to have a place that feels like home on the other side of the Pacific." |
