¿Qué pasa en Wellington? Community and culture

1) Brazilian Arts: history and present day. Tuesday 21 July. Guest Speaker: Daniele Abreu e Lima – Lecturer/School of Architecture/VUW.
The objective of the lecture is to offer an overview of the Brazilian art scene from the indigenous art to the post-modern movements. The lecture will focus on the 1920s struggle for national identity for the artistic expressions and in the contemporary’s movements that are now world recognized.
2) Brazilian Literature and Translation. Thursday 23 July.
Guest Speakers: Marco Sonzogni - Senior Lecturer in Italian/School of Languages and Cultures & New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation/VUW & Patrícia V. C. Marotta - Director of the Brazilian Studies Programme /School of Languages and Cultures – VUW
This lecture is divided in two panels. The first panel will discuss about Brazilian literature’s long and rich history, from the first texts describing the new land, its aborigines, and their culture, during the 16th Century, to modern topics nowadays. It will present the most important Brazilian literary movements, their influences, and historic context. The second part will focus on the transfer of cultural material in literary translation and on the responsibilities of the translator as a cultural as well as a linguistic agent of mediation.
3) Capoeira: Brazilian Martial Art and African Heritage. Friday 24 July.
Guest Speaker: Clô Mudrik - B. A. Physical Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching
Is Capoeira a Brazilian Martial Art, a Dance, a Fight, or a Sport Game? This lecture will discuss the origins, social and anthropologic meaning of Capoeira.
All seminars are from 6:00-7:30pm, Old Government Building annexe, room GBLT1 (15, Lambton Quay). Admission is Free!
- World Film Showcase:
The Language Learning Centre presents a selection celebrating Maori Language Week presented in association with the School of Maori Studies, and then 5 Argentinean movies follow during August, in association with the Embassy of Argentina. We also present the French movie Un Secret.
Movies will be shown on the big screen in one of the LLC's computer classrooms at the Kelburn Campus, VUW (VZ003) on Wednesday and Thursday evenings starting at 5pm, with the venue accommodating about 25 students. Entry is free! See details here.

- Spanish-language community radio: Culture and music and issues of Latin America within the local community. Presented in Spanish.
- Latin America Solidarity Committee Aotearoa (LAC): The LAC exists to spread information about development issues and current events in Latin America in Aotearoa (New Zealand).
