History and purpose

This scholarship was created by Mr T.J.A. Ballinger and Mrs E.B. Ballinger, are specifically aimed at students pursuing Science, Mathematics, and/or Engineering degrees at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. These scholarships have been designed to provide financial assistance to students who are currently in their second year of study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be second-year students studying at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington (preference will be given to students studying Science, Mathematics and/or Engineering).
  • The scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit although factors such as character, leadership, community involvement and financial circumstances may also be taken into account. The scholarship may be held by each student for up to three years providing an average A- (a 7.0 GPA) or above is maintained. The general intention is that in any year a second-year student, a third-year student and a fourth-year student will hold this scholarship.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington having completed a minimum of 80 points at 100 level.
  • Preference will be given to applicants studying Science, Mathematics and/or Engineering.
  • Scholarships are awarded primarily on academic merit however factors such as character, leadership, community involvement and financial circumstances may also be taken into account.
  • The scholarship may be held for up to three years subject to achieving an A- (7 GPA) or above.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Past recipients who wish to be considered for continuation of the scholarship for third or fourth years must notify the scholarships office by 1 March in order to be considered for further funding

Selection process

Selection will be made by the Victoria University Undergraduate Scholarships Committee.

Recipients will be required to write thank you letters on receiving the Scholarship.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
