History or background of award
The Society for Philosophy & Culture is a student run interdisciplinary academic group, with branches at Victoria University of Wellington and McMaster University, as well as a publishing branch. The Society promotes interdisciplinary and cross-cultural work in the Humanities and Social Sciences by organising public speaking events at Victoria University of Wellington and McMaster (http://www.philosophyandculture.org/previous.html). The publishing branch, the sponsor of this award, publishes ebooks of academic works by established scholars, such as J.L. Shaw, Robert Paul Wolff, Gerald Dworkin, Ralph Pettman and more, as well as a series titled “New Scholarship” which promotes the work of up-and-coming scholars in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Purpose of award
The award is offered to Master's students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Psychology who have either recently submitted their thesis.
The Award is open to anyone in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Psychology, who have recently completed, or are nearing completion of, their thesis.
How do students apply?
Applicants must complete a two page outline of their project, as well as a sample of their thesis, preferably a completed chapter of up to 10,000 words.
Priority will be given to: Work that is interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary, or that will be of interest to scholars outside the author’s home discipline. Work that engages with more than one scholarly or cultural tradition. Work that has a theoretical focus.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Acceptance of the Award comes with a commitment to take all reasonable steps to ensure the work into a publish-worthy condition, according to our expectations (formatting, reference style, spelling style, etc.) and agreement to their completed dissertation being published as an ebook (subject to embargoed thesis).
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
In addition to the small prize, recipients must agree to their completed thesis being made available for publication by the Society as an ebook, in the 'New Scholarship' series.
