Āwhina mentoring programme

Take on a leading role making things happen on campus for Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design students.

How Āwhina mentoring works

All new Āwhina members are paired with an academic mentor or tuākana, to be guided by and supported through studies in any Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design (SEAD) course.

Both mentors and mentees will receive training and guidance from Āwhina. Together you will meet and discuss your course content at least once a week. Communication is at the heart of a great mentoring relationship.

Mentors

A mentor is an experienced student (with B+ average) who guides, supports and encourages a mentee to enhance their journey through Victoria University towards greater achievement.

Expectations of mentors

  • Contact your mentee and organise a time and place to meet.
  • Report to Āwhina on attendance.
  • Attend training, and Āwhina events.

Mentees

Our mentees are connected with a student who has passed the same course they are studying. You'll receive guidance, support and encouragement from a mentor to enhance your tertiary experience.

Expectations of mentees

  • Meet with your mentor at least once a week.
  • Come prepared to discuss your course content.
  • Attend training, and Āwhina events.
