About Te Rōpū Āwhina

We offer a culturally relevant learning environment for our students. Find out more about our kaupapa.

Te Rōpū Āwhina (Āwhina) is Victoria University’s on-campus whanau support for Māori and Pasifika students enrolled in degrees or courses in Science, Engineering, Architecture and Design (SEAD).

Our kaupapa (goal) is to support you through your journey in SEAD so you can inspire, educate and contribute to the future development and leadership of our Maori and Pasifika people

We provide whānau rooms (learning spaces) that enable you to study, learn and engage with like-minded students. These rooms are study and discussion areas which are fully equipped with computers, whiteboards, pin boards and small kitchenette facilities that create a warm and welcoming environment.

As an Āwhina member you will be provided with an academic mentor who will guide and support you through your studies in any SEAD course as well as being introduced to staff who provide holistic support and care.

Joining Āwhina

If you are of Maori or Pasifika descent and are enrolled in any Science, Engineering, Architecture or Design courses, you are automatically enrolled in Te Rōpū Āwhina.

You will be contacted by an Āwhina member to discuss what courses you want to be mentored in and informed on what other support services are available.
