Disability Services

Current Staff

We believe a student’s main focus should be on learning and enjoying their time at Victoria.

Victoria strives to create an environment that values diversity and in which all of our community are valued. To achieve this for students with impairments, the University makes a concerted effort to develop facilities, policies and support structures that assist them in their study. If a student is Deaf, has an impairment, injury or medical condition, which affects their learning, participation and enjoyment at Victoria, tailored assistance is available.

Working with Parents

Disability Services works alongside around 700 students with impairments each year and welcomes visits from parents and whanau, particularly in the transition to university. Our first point of contact will always be the student and we seek their consent before interacting with you.

Current Students

The team at Disability Services helps students find solutions to difficulties they may face. A Disability and Inclusion Adviser can help with arrangements for courses and exams, liaise with teaching and other staff and help with access to useful equipment and facilities. Other services include adaptive technology support, rest and study rooms, sign language interpreters, academic support note-takers, mobility parking and access to ergonomic furniture.

Prospective Students

When a student is planning their degree they can seek advice from Disability Services, learn about our services and familiarise themselves with the environment. Once students arrive at Victoria, Disability Services provides services to help them study successfully, including working with academic staff.

New Environment

Some students who use our services may not have required additional support at secondary school because their needs were met in other ways (eg. by teachers, parents or friends). Victoria provides assistance through Disability Services note-takers and volunteer staff networks. We encourage students to articulate their needs, make decisions about how they approach their study and to take advantage of the various support networks available on campus.

Due to the size of the University campuses, and their locations, mobility may be more of a challenge. Mobility vans are available to help transport students around the campuses, to/from Halls of Residence and the railway station. Wellington has accessible buses that go regularly between campuses and to town.

Being in a new environment may trigger feelings of isolation or anxiety. We encourage students to make networks, take recreation opportunities and approach staff who can help in the transition to university.
