Student Counselling Service

Transitions generally present some challenges. These can be both exciting and difficult, especially when you arrive in a culture that is very different from your own, and when you are far from your usual support systems.

Whilst there are universal values for all, we at the Counselling Service recognise that there is a difference between cultures and that there can be very subtle, but powerful, values and expectations operating for International Students and Migrant Students.

The Counselling team is here to help you face such challenges. We can provide support with cross-cultural adjustments and academic and personal concerns.

We recognise the unique needs of International and Migrant students. We encourage you to be proud of your cultural heritage, as well as to appreciate and fully experience New Zealand culture.

For Asian students who are more comfortable expressing themselves in their first language, Magdalen Ser can provide counselling in Cantonese, Hokkein, Khek and Mandarin.

The Student Counselling Service provides a free service to all domestic and NZAid students. International students are charged for counselling, and for those insured with VUW Studentsafe (Vero) the Student Counselling Service can bill Studentsafe directly. Students who are insured with other insurance companies will need to pay and claim reimbursement from their insurer.
