Congratulations to Georgia McLean who has received one of the three Tourism Industry New Zealand Trust Scholarships for 2016.

Georgia is in her first year of a Bachelor of Tourism Management degree and heard about the scholarship in her last year of college.

She decided to apply and was absolutely delighted to receive the award at the industry’s Tourism Summit in 2015.

Georgia went to secondary school in Auckland, but says she chose to do her degree in Wellington “as it is such a vibrant city with a great university culture”.

“When I started researching possible degrees, I discovered that the degree Victoria offers aligns with what I have always wanted to study, tourism and commerce together.

“The scholarship has been fantastic. Not only has it helped me get ahead financially, it has also given me a chance to spend time learning more about the industry.”

Victoria University is a member of Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA), and Professor of Tourism Management Karen Smith welcomes the investment by the industry in tourism education and careers.

“Tourism already supports over one in ten jobs in New Zealand, but the sector is growing and needs high quality and well-trained people to deliver outstanding visitor experiences and manage tourism's economic, social and environmental impacts.

“We’re proud to be working with TIA to develop the tourism leaders of tomorrow.”

The Tourism Industry New Zealand Trust Scholarships are open to students who have completed NCEA Level 2 and planning tourism related study. The $2,500 scholarship goes to the recipient's first year of tertiary education fees, and includes attendance at the annual TIA Tourism Summit, a great opportunity for insight into this important and growing sector.
