About our professional qualifications

The School of Government was launched by the Rt Hon Helen Clark in September 2002 and is 'the' place in New Zealand to study our flagship professional qualifications in public policy, public management, and e-Government.

  • Professional Degree in Public Policy
The Master of Public Policy focuses on policy analysis and advising, policy development, implementation and evaluation in the public and non-government sectors. Students learn concepts and frameworks along with the practical problem-solving skills and techniques to apply them.
  • Professional Degree in Public Management
The Master of Public Management focuses on governance and public sector reform, managing strategy, finances, planning, service delivery, human resources, monitoring and evalution. This degree is designed for those aspiring to a career in management in the government and non-government sectors, or to take their practice to the next level.
  • Professional Degree in e-Government
The Master of e-Government is a one-year professional programme that provides the opportunity for students to learn how to successfully manage complex transformational e-Government initiatives. It focuses predominantly on the public management, rather than the technical, aspects of ICT-enabled public sector reform initiatives.
  • Graduate Pathway
The Graduate Pathway, to be introduced in 2015, is a three-trimester, vocationally oriented programme of study and fieldwork leading to the award of a Master of Public Management or Master of Public Policy degree. It is a 4th-year study option following completion of a Bachelor's degree – a pre-experience, fast-track route to completing a professional Master's degree – for individuals wanting to build a career in public service.
