Research Interests

Industrial Applied Maths, Modelling

I am interested in a range of mathematics applications, generally where deterministic differential equations and asymptotic methods can be brought to bear, in industry, geophysics and biology. Particular areas of current interest include the modelling of exploding rocks, biofilms, two-phase geothermal flows in pipes, lead-acid batteries, heat and light transport in sea ice, the formation of platelet and frazil ice, and coal volatilisation.

The Mathematics-in Industry Study Group has become a favourite of mine over the years, and has strongly shaped my research interests. I recommend it as a source of challenging, brainstorming, fun, energising, and vital applied mathematics problems.
