Overview

What is Marketing?

Marketing is not just advertising. It's not just selling. It isn't persuading people to buy things they don't want or need.

Marketing is about satisfying both the needs of customers and the objectives of organisations in ways that contribute to society and its well-being.

Marketing is a vital component of all business. It involves the planning and executing of the process an organisation undertakes to achieve the exchange of goods, services and ideas between people.

Why study Marketing?

All organisations have customers, so all organisations need employees who can discover and understand their customers and engage them in mutually beneficial long-term relationships.

Knowledge of marketing provides a better understanding of the flow of goods and services from producers to consumers in a way that effectively matches supply and demand and accomplishes the economic, legal, technological, political, environmental and social objectives of society.

Marketing graduates are sought all over the world in business and government. They can be found in all levels of business, from hi-tech industries producing highly innovative goods and services, through to retail and hospitality. Gaining a Marketing degree can provide many opportunities for employees and the organisations in which they work.
