Case Study or Research Project

The capstone of the MIM is the final research component. Students who desire to explore information management practices in a single organization in depth should consider pursuing the case study option, while those who wish to apply conventional research techniques, such as survey or interview methods, should undertake the research project option on a topic relevant and important to their career objectives.

The MMIM 590 Case Study project package requires you to focus in depth on the description and analysis of a problematic information management situation faced by a real organisation. The MMIM 592 Research Project package follows a more traditional research approach, including a research question, together with the execution of a research methodology suitable for investigating the question. Both these papers include the Research Methods MMIM 552, and both are normally carried out under the personal supervision of School of Information Management academic staff member. Supervision is arranged once the student has submitted a Topic Approval Form to the Programme Administrator.

Both MMIM 590 Case Study and MMIM 592 Research Project are 30 point courses taken over two consecutive trimesters, due on the last Friday on the second trimester you are enrolled in. It is suggested you consider additional outcomes for your Case Study or Research Project; i.e. industrial/academic journal publications or conference papers. You also might like to explore with your supervisor the possibility of co-authorship.

MMIM 590 Case Study in Information Management
  • A field study of information management in an operating organisation.
MMIM 592 Research Project in Information Management
  • An independent investigation of a chosen information management issue is conducted. The student is required to complete a detailed and original research report, suitable for publication.
Overview

The information below outlines requirements for your case study/research project. For more detailed information please download the MIM Case Study and Research Project Guidelines.

  1. Access and read the MMIM 590 Case Study and MMIM 592 Research Project Guidelines.
  2. Submit a Topic Approval Form to the MIM Administrator or alternatively set up an interview with the Programme Director to discuss your topic outline.
  3. Once your topic has been officially accepted, the School of Information Management will allocate you a supervisor. If you have had some discussion with one of the MIM lecturers in respect to supervision, please alert the MIM Administrator to this.
  4. When the Research Project or Case Study is completed, or at the enrolment deadline, students should submit three soft bound copies and one electronic copy (PDF) to the MIM administrator. All relevant HEC consent forms should be included in the final soft bound copies.
A selection of MMIM Research Projects and Case Studies have been deposited in ResearchArchive@Victoria for viewing. ResearchArchive@Victoria is Victoria University's open access repository, and the archive is harvested by KRIS and Google Scholar.

For an indication of topics recently completed or currently being researched in the MIM programme please contact the Programme administrator.
