Introduction
Alastair teaches in the areas of information technology, information retrieval, and digital libraries. His research interests are in the application of computers and networks to information retrieval of document-based information, in particular expert systems, resource discovery on the World Wide Web, evaluation of information resources, digital libraries, webometrics (the application of bibliometric techniques to the World Wide Web), and online teaching. Before joining Victoria University, Alastair worked on the development of online information services at the National Library and the Building Research Association of New Zealand, and in scientific and technical information work.

Current Research
Investigating the types of links made between websites, and reasons for linking, in order to have better understanding of Web link counts as a measure of importance of websites.
