School of Information Management

Resources for PhD/MCA/MA Students

The following are provided by SIM to all thesis students:

Within the School each student enrolled in a research degree can expect to receive a high level of support in terms of office allocation, hardware, software, use of library facilities, etc. Additional support and services may be available on an individual basis, but this is to be negotiated with the Research Degrees Committee.

  1. Office space, office supplies, and furniture: Usually a shared office and telephone with two or more persons, but a personal desk, filing cabinet, bookshelves, etc. will be provided. General materials like pens, pencils, paper, staples, will also be made available. These are available to on-campus students only. There is also a Postgraduate lounge for use by all SIM postgraduate students.
  2. Electronic facilities: A full time PhD student is provided with a desktop PC and standard software (Windows 7 with MS Office: Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).  For other specific purpose softwares such as for bibliography, data analysis, etc., students could approach their supervisors who will then make these requests on their behalf.  Part-time students will share a PC with this setup. Students will be given individual email accounts and have access to internet. (Students outside Wellington are responsible for arranging their own internet service). They will also have access to telephones, postage and faxing facilities.  At present, SIM research students have access to free printing on equipment within the School and have an additional free entitlement to a maximum of 1200 sheets of photocopying per annum on photocopiers.  Charges over and above this amount will be payable by the student.
  3. Library facilities: All standard library facilities. In addition, the School pays for a reasonable number of ILL requests and other cost-recovery services.

More information on the facilities and services available to research students is available in the Minimum Resources Agreement for Thesis Students.

  2. Conference funds: After full registration has been approved, the School will consider applications for conference funding if the student has had a paper accepted at a conference of standing in the discipline.
  3. MA Research funds: Each MA student is encouraged to apply to the FHSS Faculty Research Fund for a grant up to a maximum of $500.  The applications are made through the School.  For more information, see the FHSS Masters Guidelines below.
