Course description

INFO 561 Web and Intranet Content Management examines the application of the principles of information retrieval and information architecture to the design of websites and intranets. Topics will be selected from: the emerging role of the web content manager, organising information for retrieval, usability design in websites, project management and conceptual design in web site development, and accessibility issues.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Define a business purpose for a website, and carry this through into specifications and design.
  2. Develop a project plan for managing the content of a website.
  3. Outline the role of the Web content manager, and appropriate policies for website maintenance.
  4. Apply the key principles of effective information design to the development and management of websites and intranets.
  5. Discuss key issues in the management of content in websites and intranets, including legal and ethical issues, metadata and search optimization, and evaluation.

Schedule (2011)

INFO 561 will be held in the third trimester (November 2011-February 2012) of the 2011 academic year. There will be no classes during the mid-term break (19 December-8 January).

    This course will be delivered via distance mode only. The weekly Internet conference sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 5.00-6.30 p.m.

Usability, accessibility and usability testing

Writing, and editing for the Web

Social networking software: RSS, wikis, Blogs etc.

Web publishing processes, including single source publishing

Week 7

Search engines, and search engine optimisation

Week 8

Metadata and the Semantic Web

Week 9

Security, archiving, legal issues (including IP and disclaimers)

Week 10

Evaluation: user groups, surveys, Web metrics
