Work placements

Work placements

Work placements provide students with invaluable work experience and often help clarify their career direction.

Our Wellington location enables access to a wide variety of professional placements within environmental resource management, such as the Ministry for the Environment.

This work placement or practicum (ENVI 512) is a supervised placement in an organisation or agency that specialises in environmental or resource management. Its terms are negotiated in consultation with the Programme Director and the prospective employer.

The placement is 200 hours' work which is usually unpaid, although sometimes paid work can be negotiated. It can be carried out either over an extended period in term-time or in a concentrated block, sometimes during university vacations.

ENVI 512 requires attendance at seminars, usually near the start of Trimester 1, when students take turns to give a presentation on their placement. In addition, students are also required to supply:

  • a short report summarising the placement
  • a completed supervisor evaluation form
  • a self evaluation form

All the ENVI 512 course requirements must be completed by the beginning of March in the year following enrolment.

Evaluation forms are available from the Programme Administrator.
