Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies (PGDipEnvStud)

This is a one year postgraduate qualification suitable for recent graduates or those in the workforce who wish to broaden their undergraduate degree or update their skills. The Postgraduate Diploma may also be completed in up to 2 years part time.

Prerequisites

Postgraduate Diploma students must have previously completed a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Candidates must have at least with an average grade of B or higher in relevant 300 level courses and/or relevant work experience.

Students must also demonstrate an understanding of how the proposed programme will develop their career, and have appropriate time and motivation to complete the programme.

ENVI 520 - Environmental Management (15 points)
ENVI 521 - Research Methods in Environmental Studies (15 points)
90 further points from ENVI 522–530

Up to 30 of this points might be replaced by approved 400 or 500-level courses from other disciplines (see list on postgraduate prospectus), with approval from the Head of School.

Students may progress to Part 2 of the Masters programme if an average grade of B+ or higher is obtained in the diploma courses.

Applications must be received by the 9th of December. Part time enrolment is possible.

Master of Environment Studies (MEnvStud)

A Master's is a professionally or academically oriented research degree. It consists of two parts and is normally completed in two calendar years. Part 1 (the first year) involves two core courses and a further 90 points of the student's choice. Part 2 (the second year) is a full-time research project, leading to a thesis. The degree may also be completed in up to 4 years part time.

Prerequisites

Master's candidates must have previously completed one of the following:

A Bachelors degree with at least an average grade of B or higher in relevant 300 level courses and/or relevant work experience.
A Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies with at least a B+ average
Part 1 of a Master of Environmental Studies with at least a B+ average
Acceptance of a thesis proposal by the programme director.

In some cases an equivalent qualification from another university may be acceptable and in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to enrol in part 2 of the Master's without having undertaken the Postgraduate Diploma or Master's part 1.

Students must also demonstrate an understanding of how the proposed programme will develop their career, and have appropriate time and motivation to complete the programme. In addition, the programme director must accept the thesis proposal and be satisfied that the thesis can be supervised in the School.

Part 2

ENVI 591 - Thesis (120 points), or
ENVI 512 - Work placement (30 points) or, for those with relevant work experience, an additional 30 points from the courses listed under Part 1 above; and ENVI 593

Students should carefully plan their courses, placement experience and thesis topic to bring an appropriate focus to their programme, ideally targeted to an area of employment identified by the student.

Entry to part 2 requires the acceptance of athesis proposal by the postgraduate programme director in Environmental Studies and either a B+ average from Part 1 courses or special permission from the director.

PhD in Environmental Studies

The PhD is the highest degree offered by the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences and usually takes three to four years to complete. It is an internationally recognised research degree culminating in a thesis and opens up rich and varied career opportunities.

Prerequistes

A first class or high second class Honours or Masters degree.

Our graduates have found employment with central government agencies such as the Ministry for the Environment and the Department of Conservation, as well as the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, regional and district councils around the country, companies, runanga, Iwi organisations, intergovernmental agencies, environmental and non-governmental agencies and industry organisations.
